A wonderful antique sterling silver Mizpah Crescent brooch.
Steeped in sentiment this beautiful brooch has stacks of romantic symbolism.
It features a double heart design with the word Mizpah along with a prayer engraved inside one heart and a swallow in flight to the other side, below all this tying the piece together nicely is a heart shaped padlock and key symbolising the key to my heart.
These pieces were usually gifted as romantic tokens of love for one another or when someone was going to be travelling away and the addition of the swallow likely symbolises a promise to return.
It is designed very much in the aesthetic manner but of Edwardian era and would make an absolutely charming gift.
The brooch has an old C type clasp and pin fastener.
The aesthetic movement began in the late 19th century and was a movement that favoured beauty and championed art for arts sake.
