A gorgeous antique, late Victorian silver and Moonstone scorpion brooch.
The scorpion is crafted from sterling silver, and has an outstretched tail and claws.
The top of the body adorned with large oval Moonstone cabochons with a lovely blue shimmer.
There are three Moonstone to the body and one on each claw and also has sparkling paste eyes.
This guy despite being a scorpion only has six legs and scorpions in reality have eight as they are arachnids but I think we can let the Victorians off the hook due to the outstanding beauty of their jewellery in general, he could also pass for lobster on second look but they have even more legs!
The Victorian's began somewhat of an obsession with insect and arachnid themed jewels from scarabs to spiders, entomology was increasingly popular with insects appearing in many places not least jewellery.
They were seen as an exotic fashion and this carried on into the early 20th century.
No marks tests as sterling silver, c1900
It has a base metal pin and a c type clasp.
Condition:
Good usedcondition overall, light patina and surface wear commensurate with age, one moonstone is slightly dulled and discoloured, appears to have been reset with glue.
Approx measurements:
1.10" total width
3" length
Weight approx 6.33 grams
