Antique Georgian mourning pendant brooch, 18ct gold, Amethyst and Pearl
Antique Georgian mourning pendant brooch, 18ct gold, Amethyst and Pearl
This is truly one of the most beautiful antique mourning pendant / brooches of its design.
It is crafted in the richest 18ct yellow gold with a bloomed finish, this beautiful old gold contrasting beautifully with three rich deep purple amethyst stones.
The amethyst are intercepted by tiny creamy seed pearls and there is a pearl halo to the centre surrounding a small glazed window which contains a lock of hair beneath.
These types of hair jewellery were not just seen in mourning jewellery but also often love tokens, a memento to remember a loved one when they were away.
This fastens as a brooch with an old c type pin and clasp fastener and can also be worn as a pendant suspended from the lovely original chased and engraved bale.
A fine piece of early 19th century however it is worn.
