A beautiful antique Victorian mourning necklace.
It is a large chunky mariner link chain necklace made from vulcanite.
The necklace fastens with a black lacquered metal spring ring.
The mariner link is a nice find on a vulcanite piece and more often you would find circular links.
Vulcanite was a popular material for use in mourning jewellery due to the dark aesthetic that it produced and was a common alternative to jet.
What is Vulcanite? A hardened rubber discovered in the 1830s by Charles Goodyear, it was commonly used as an alternative to Whitby Jet and often in mourning Jewellery, it was easier to produce and more readily available.
Nowadays original Vulcanite jewellery is increasingly hard to find and very popular.
This is a beautiful piece, lovely and chunky but lightweight piece with a surprisingly modern look to it.
Unmarked, Late Victorian era c1880s.
Condition:
Good used condition overall with signs of age and use, surface wear commensurate with age, lacquer worn on the spring ring, some fade to the black colour with khaki brown showing through
Approx measurements:
19.5" length
Links Approx 0.75" width at the widest point
44 grams weight
