Antique 9ct gold Spider brooch, Amethyst and Pearl, large, boxed

There are spider brooches and then there are SPIDER brooches, this beauty is definitely in the latter category.

This is a very fine and handsome example, a large 9ct gold bar brooch mounted with a substantial sized gold spider.

The spiders body is set with the most beautifully rich and vibrant amethyst stone along with a small glowing cultured pearl to the thorax.

This brooch is very well designed and the stone is simply gorgeous, bezel set in a 9ct yellow gold millegrain setting.

It comes on the original fitted antique jewellery box so would make for a wonderful gift.

The Victorian's began somewhat of an obsession with insect themed jewels from scarabs to spiders, entomology was increasingly popular with insects appearing in many places not least jewellery.

They were seen as an attractive and exotic fashion and this carried on into the early 20th century.

It has a pin and a c type clasp fastener along with an added fold safety chain.

Late Victorian era c1890s, marked on the reverse 9ct

Condition:
Good used condition overall, light surface wear and patina to the gold bar, spider is in good condition with minimal wear.
