A beautiful, rare antique Victorian Whitby Jet long chain necklace and Vulcanite Cross pendant.
It has chunky oval links in rich inly black jet, the necklace is an unusually long length for such a chunky jet piece, this necklace makes a real statement and is a truly exceptional piece of mourning jewellery.
The chain has a large Vulcanite Cross pendant attached, a large size.
Vulcanite was a popular material for use in mourning jewellery due to the dark aesthetic that it produced and was a common alternative to jet.
What is Vulcanite? A hardened rubber discovered in the 1830s by Charles Goodyear, it was commonly used as an alternative to Whitby Jet and often in mourning Jewellery, it was easier to produce and more readily available.
Nowadays original Vulcanite jewellery is increasingly hard to find and very popular and Whitby Jet is highly prized.
This is a beautiful piece, lovely and chunky with a surprisingly modern look to it.
Unmarked, Late Victorian era c1880s.
Condition:
Good used condition overall with signs of age and use, surface wear commensurate with age, some fade to the cross with the black colour having a khaki brown showing through, one link of chain with a cotton repair
Approx measurements:
45" chain length
3.60" Cross length
2" Cross width
Links Approx 0.5" width at the widest point
