Antique Mistletoe brooch, 9ct gold and Pearl
Antique Mistletoe brooch, 9ct gold and Pearl
The sweetest little antique mistletoe brooch.
What this piece lacks in size it makes up for in detailing and symbolism.
It is a safety pin style brooch, the front adorned with a little sprig of mistletoe with the most lifelike details, the branch and leaves are realistically textured and the gold has a slight green hue, the berries are made from tiny creamy seed pearls and affixed to the base of the sprig.
There are many stories regarding mistletoe and the common belief that it is to be kissed under, particularly during the festive season.
According to Norse mythology it is thought to have been used in the arrow that shot Balder, son of Odin and his mother vowed it never to be used as a weapon again but to spread love and to kiss anyone that walked beneath it.
It is also symbolic of love, fertility and vitality.
It fastens much like a safety pin and the pin is gold.
Lots of symbolism and meaning wrapped up into this delicate little piece and they are seldom seen so this is a lovely find.
