A beautiful antique Victorian mourning locket.
It is a chunky locket made from vulcanite with an applied spray of flowers possibly Fuschia to the front.
The locket has browned with age as is very common with old Vulcanite but it would have been rich black originally.
It opens to reveal two compartments for storing photographs but no glazing, it has one old sepia photograph within a gilt frame.
Vulcanite was a popular material for use in mourning jewellery due to the dark aesthetic that it produced.
It is a lacquered black brass bale attached.
Unmarked, Late Victorian era c1880s.
A fine and unusual piece of mourning jewellery.
Condition:
Good used condition overall with signs of age and use, no glazed covers, small chip to the reverse, general surface wear, browned with age.
Approx measurements:
1.6" length including bale
1.25" width
11.95 grams weight
