Antique Victorian mourning brooch, 9ct gold, Flat cut Garnet, Lace pin
Antique Victorian mourning brooch, 9ct gold, Flat cut Garnet, Lace pin
The Victorians were well known for their sentiment and it shows, not least in their beautiful Mourning pieces.
This sweet antique Mourning brooch or lace pin is a typical design of the Georgian era that remained popular throughout the 19th century.
It is a small piece in a rectangular shape with a halo of flat cut Garnets around the outer rim, the Garnets encompassing a tiny glazed panel with a piece of silk beneath, usually holding hair but this one doesn't.
It is crafted in 9ct gold and has an old c type clasp and pin fastener.
It is engraved to the reverse M. W June 3rd 1839, aged 19.
Due to it's small size it was most probably a lace pin, used to secure the lengths of lace or fichu at the neck of both men and women, today it could be worn in many ways, on a collar or lapel, swagged on a chain or in a hat!
