A beautiful, Georgian, late 18th century crowned heart ring.
It is made up of a pear shaped flat cut almandine garnet representing the heart and the crown is made up of pretty Rose cut diamonds collet set into silver.
I love the mysterious and rich red of the old Georgian flat cut garnets and this one is no exception.
The two end stones are old rose cut diamond and the centre is a paste replacement.
Crowned hearts as a symbol in jewels have been around since the middle ages, often used as protective amulets and later symbolising love and friendship depending on how they were shaped and what they were paired with.
The crowned heart is said to symbolise loyalty and with the addition of the heart itself are often thought of as loyalty in love or friendship.
The band is made from rich 9ct gold, smooth polished with a slight D profile and is a later replacement.
It is Unmarked, band tests as 9ct gold, setting is 18ct gold and silver.
An exceptional antique ring with stacks of character, these are highly sought after pieces and this is a nice early example.
Condition:
Good used condition overall, some age commensurate surface wear and signs of use, one diamond with a paste replacement, replacement band, garnet shifted slightly in the setting.
UK/AU ring size K½
US ring size 5⅜
EU ring size 50.27
Total weight 2.63 grams
Approx 14.9mm length ring head and 2.2mm band width
