Antique 9ct gold seashell brooch, Baroque pearl, Victorian
Antique 9ct gold seashell brooch, Baroque pearl, Victorian
A gorgeous antique 9ct gold and Baroque pearl seashell brooch.
Designed very well as a seashell or whelk shell in 9ct gold with a creamy white Baroque pearl sat nestled in the opening of the shell.
It sits on a slender 9ct gold safety pin style bar brooch.
The Victorian's had somewhat of an obsession with animals and the natural world, this could be seen in many areas from art to fashion and of course in jewels from scarabs to birds animal themes were increasingly popular and this magical brooch really captures that sentiment.
The seashell itself also has symbolic meaning going back thousands of years, they are traditionally believed to represent love, fertility and protection and were also worn to ward off evil.
We love the realistic and natural design of this piece, it really stands out from the crowd.
Very versatile, could be worn in many ways, on a lapel or as a tie or scarf pin, even as a hat embellishment, there really are so many possibilities.
Unmarked, late Victorian era, C1880s, tests as 9ct gold.
