A stunning, rare Victorian sterling silver mourning locket.
This piece is steeped in sentiment and history and is a most unusual and beautiful piece.
Large oval silver locket with an engraved monogram to the front with the initials AOG, in fancy script.
The reverse of the locket has an engraved heraldic crest of a crown and a cross with the Latin inscription; per crucem ad corona, which means Through the Cross to the crown.
Within the locket has two glazed panels, one side enclosing a lock of hair and the other a photograph of a gentleman.
There is a small engraved inscription to the inner rim Oct 18th 1875.
It has a large integral bale to the top.
Unmarked, tests as sterling silver, Victorian era C1870s.
It would be wonderful to research more about the family crest and the gentleman enclosed within.
Condition:
Good used condition overall, some patina and light surface wear.
Approx measurements:
2.1" length with bale
1.25" width
Weight approx 18.83 grams.
