A stunning antique Victorian sterling silver locket pendant.
A large sized oval locket with aesthetic style engraving of a butterfly and foliage.
It has a large integral bale, perfect for adding to a long antique chain or a choker style necklace.
The Victorians were enamoured by the natural world and elements of nature were often used in jewellery pieces.
The butterfly specifically had a number of meanings attached to it, it represented growth and the soul, the last stage of spiritual development and also death, they were regularly used in mourning pieces as the butterflies final transition was its last.
It is a beautiful locket, it has two sides to store photographs, pictures or tiny keepsakes but no glazed covers.
Unmarked, tests as sterling silver, c1880s
Condition:
Good used condition overall, some age commensurate wear and signs of use, no glazed covers.
Approx measurements:
1.25" width
2.10" height including the bale.
