A magical antique 9ct gold opal set magnifying glass pendant.
It is a larger piece much larger than say a quizzing glass and is more the size of a traditional small magnifying glass, it has the original heavy glass lense, perfectly preserved in time.
Crafted in 9ct yellow gold the handle is engraved and it has a small fixed loop bale and is set to the base with an opal cabochon.
Usually worn around the neck on a ribbon or chain for ease of use, these beautiful decorative pieces really were a functional piece of jewellery.
Worn by both men and women of the period, a perfect example of beauty in a functional item, something that the Georgian and Victorian eras took great pleasure in producing.
This item was for a female as it is engraved on the handle Charlotte London 1873, who was Charlotte? Why was she in London?
We will never know but perhaps she went off to work or study in London and this was a going away gift, either way I wish I could see what it has seen!
This looks great on a nice antique gold long chain.
Marks and era:
It is marked 9ct, tests as 9ct gold, English make c1870s, Victorian era.
