A beautiful and unusual early Victorian Snake or Ouroboros brooch.
Victorian design at its very finest this brooch incorporates so many beautiful materials and so much symbolism in a small but mighty piece.
It features a snake coiled around as the frame in 9ct gold, biting its own tail to form an Ouroboros design, this has been a design in use right back to Ancient Egyptian times.
It is thought to represent the cycle of life and death, the never ending cycle and also therefore eternity amongst other things.
The centre is set with a gorgeous and interesting turquoise matrix cabochon, Turquoise matrix has veins of the parent rock running through to create the delicate patterns.
It has an old C type clasp and pin fastener with a later added safety chain.
