The infamous poison ring, also known as locket or vessel rings are shrouded in mystery and tales of debauchery.
This incredible antique, Victorian era mourning ring is probably a locket ring of the more romantic or sentimental type, the tiny locket hidden behind a carved bloodstone intaglio with initials in gothic script, currently holds a lock of finely braided dark hair.
The initials appear to read IV or this could be NJ or NI depending on which way it is worn / opens up
The beautiful engraved 15ct yellow gold band is decorated with a further band of finely woven dark hairwork, commemorating the death of a loved one.
The Victorians were as enamoured by the dark history behind the poison the ring as we are now and readily adopted the style into their sentimental and mourning jewellery, an idea taken from earlier times when they would hold relics from the saints.
The history though goes back much further to the ancient times when they were said to hold deadly poisons, usually for committing suicide to avoid a brutal death but occasionally for murder or so the story goes, what do think?
A true beauty, this would be a fantastic gift for the collector of mourning jewellery or as a gift to yourself.
