An attractive and unusual antique bronze pipe tamper modelled as a frog.
It is a highly detailed piece, cold painted in realistic colours, the frog is climbing up and looking over and yet his legs are tied to the post.
Despite the fact that the tied up legs give a slightly unsettling feel, coupled with the great urge to release him, he appears to have a happy expression, it is very thought provoking.
An extremely high quality and scarce antique bronze, a nice addition to any collection.
Produced by Franz Bergman with the design being attributed to Fremiet, Fremiet designed the original sculpture as a seal and it is stamped with Fremiet to the lower half.
Fremiets version was not painted and remained in unfinished bronze.
Marked on the underside for Franz Bergman, the B within Urn mark, made, late 1910's / early 1920's, it appears to have been made by Bergman with attribution going to Fremiet, an interesting collaboration if ever there was of two extremely renowned artists.
Condition:
Good used condition overall, some paint loss and chipping, age commensurate signs of use and wear.
Approx measurements:
4.25" height
1" width
1" length
Weighs 101 grams
