This months short blog post highlights the wonderful gemstone the turquoise.
Also one of the birthstones for December this magical stone is rich in beauty and history!
In fact Turquoise is believed to be one of the oldest gemstones in the world with the Egyptians using the stone for jewellery and also burying in tombs, the oldest discovered being dated to around 5000 BC.
It is adored around the globe and with many nationalities, it was heavily prominent in Native Indian jewellery and they held the belief that it helped to promote rainfall and good aim amongst other things.
It is becoming more rare in modern times due to various factors such as global government restrictions, cost of mining and also the depletion of natural resources, this is even more reason to shop a pre loved or antique turquoise piece to eliminate the need for further mining and use of resources.
It has a wide range of tones from sky blue to deep forest green and is opaque with a hardness on the Mohs scale of between 5-6 this makes it a relatively fragile stone that is susceptible to knocks and also heat and chemicals so always best to remove when carrying out day to day tasks.
